Two restaurants closed late last year on Howard Avenue in Biloxi and in a quick turnaround, two more are about to open in those vacant spaces.

The countdown is on for the debut of Ole Biloxi Cafe, coming to the former Burger Burger location at 1039 Howard Avenue. Burger Burger closed in September when the owners retired after decades of feeding locals and visitors.

Right across the street, the former Empanola restaurant and Pisano’s Pizzeria closed in November. The building is being transformed into Eataliano, an Italian restaurant at 1036 Howard Avenue. Renovations are under way and plans haven’t yet been announced for the opening date and menu.

Ole Biloxi Cafe owner Tina Redwine hopes to get her latest restaurant open this week, said her husband, David Redwine. He’s overseeing the renovations, including the restoration of the original wood floors and the brick in the entry. Openings were cut between the dining rooms, brightening the space that still has the old Biloxi photos on the walls of the entry of the sturdy old home that also has a seasonal dining porch.

They’ve already got favorite recipes and years of experience.

“We started with a bakery in 1996,” he said, and their kids now are helping run the family business that includes Polk Country Cafe in Polk County and Biloxi Country Cafe on Lemonyne Avenue in Biloxi.

The menu at Ole Biloxi Cafe will be much like their other locations, David Redwine said, although it also will keep the daily specials people liked at Burger Burger.

“What they were doing was working,” he said of the owners who put in 40-plus years.

“We’re going to keep a lot of what the regulars are used to,” he said, and add more options.

Red beans and rice will still lead off the week as the Monday special, and Ole Biloxi Cafe will add to that, bringing back the “meat and two sides” lunch that was popular at Burger Burger. Customers will be able to choose from two or three proteins and several vegetables, he said, such as house-cut fries, fried okra, greens, potato salad and vegetable of the day.

Breakfast all days and ‘soul to sea’

The restaurant will open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and breakfast will be available all day.

Once the liquor license is approved, they’ll add dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Beer is available until then, Redwine said.

“We sell a lot of shrimp omelettes,” he said, along with shrimp and grits, their pancake breakfast and omelettes. Customers will be able to order eggs with a few trimmings all the way up to a hearty breakfast feast. Biscuits can be topped with tomato gravy, one of Tina Redwine’s specialty recipes.

The number one seller — for breakfast, lunch and dinner — is country fried steak they cut themselves and serve with white or brown gravy.

“It’s fresh and it’s really good,” he said, and he’s a fan. “I know why people come in and get them.”

When the Redwines bought the building, they didn’t get the recipe for the infamous, oversized Burger Burger.

“That is an old recipe, and it’s really nostalgic to this building,” he said. The Redwines have a good burger, he said, along with fried bologna, fried pimento cheese sandwiches, po-boys and baked potatoes stuffed with Philly cheese steak, broccoli cheddar and other toppings.

The dinner menu follows a “soul to sea” lineup of shrimp spaghetti, catfish and seafood platter, along with a list of favorite South Mississippi appetizers like fried green tomatoes, seafood bread and nachos, although their nachos are topped with shrimp, crab and their house made queso.

Desserts at their Biloxi Country Cafe end dinner with a root beer float, beignet sticks, banana pudding or three layer cake.

The doors to the cafe will open, and the community invited to stop by once all the inspections and permits are in place.
