
I love dark meat chicken on the bone. Decided to grill these up and have to say this was my first very successful direct grill. I did 2 zone so some indirect as well but I did not use any plates to create a cold zone. It was either over the fire or next to it. Also was successful in vent management to keep the smoke clean and was able to have the meat directly over the coals without searing them. Sauced them and left them to n a little longer. Came out great.
On another note, the XL is hungry for charcoal when doing a direct cook!

I find on the XL doing two zone the way you did is quite easy since it’s so big. The grate is huge.
