I am interested in getting an old Genesis and am looking for feedback if this is worth picking up? Asking price is $50 and it allegedly works. I’m a kettle guy so I have no input on if it’s a good unit or not.

If the drive is under 20mins, I’d be okay with paying $40 for it considering you gotta replace the flavorizer bars. Super cool grill no matter what though.

I would snap that up and replace all the guts. It will clean up nice and it will last more than 20 years.

Yes!!! Great color too!
Pew-Aerobics
I spent $300 restoring one. It’s fantastic. Fun project too

Buy buy buy. $50 is a no brainer, might need new burner tubes, flavorizer bars and grill grates. Don’t go cheap, get stainless 9mm grates and flavorizer bars. You’ll have a solid grill for thirty years.

As long as the box isn’t rusted out it’s definitely worth it

Look back on this sub I think – someone restored one of these and it was glorious! Go for it!

Definitely, it’s exactly what my next Webber will look like!

These are popular restoration pieces for a reason. It’s iconic and you can still get replacement parts. You can explore this sub to see amazing examples, like people who have replaced the wooden slats with teak or ipe. Good luck!

Yep

Genesis is a great grill and worth a restoration. That being said , I’d wait for a better example with a side burner. Bonus if you can find a scrap NG version that you can pull the side burner off. They offer better btu output with propane

definitly worth it, BUT It doesn’t look right though upper flavoizer bars need replaced but there should be no lower ones, they are covering the gas jets and the owner may be hiding something edit: like rotted out grease tray and bad gas jets. check prices of replacement parts and then decide. So maybe worth it

Love mine. I have the same color. Looks amazing on the deck and cooks great. Go for it!

I bought a red Spirit 2 that was in bad shape like this, it was a “driveway grill.” It was also $50
I bought third party flavorizer bars off Amazon and cleaned the burner tubes while I waited for shipping. New gas line, new ignition battery, and a lot of scrubbing and it runs just fine.
I added GBS grates for $50, a full sized griddle for $130, and another ~$60 for a propane tank from costco.
This Spirit is a monster and that old Genesis will be even better after a bit of work
MizzChnandlerBong
Yep totally worth it for $50. You will need to spend close to $100 to put new grates, burner tubes and flavorizer bars in it but then it will be ready to rip! I’ve fixed up a couple, they are great grills.
don_croy
Absolutely. I had that exact same grill for 25-30 years before I bought a new Genesis II — not because there was anything wrong with my old one. I just wanted an upgrade.
Replace the guts and you’ll get a decade or two out of it.
FunnyItWorkedLastTim
I got pretty much the same one in similar condition for free but in black, but would probably have been happy paying that much. It’s a great grill once you get it back in shape.

I never understood the knob placement on the older models. I would find a later model with the knobs in front as they should be.

Yes, buy it. The older Genesis steel was way heavier than the new ones today. Also the new ones have a gap where wind can get in and blow out the flame, but these were enclosed. Just replace all the guts, clean her up with degreaser from Auto Zone, and repaint or replace the wood. Look up a manual to see what’s supposed to be in the inside just to get some knowledge. I had one for 20 years. Nothing wrong with it. Had to sell due to moving in an apartment. Great project.

Definitely worth it! Best weber grills EVER! Just fixed one up for the inlaws (2 burner). They are built to last and currently have way to many.
Yes! Buy it! You can get all the guts from Amazon for about $150 or so. 200 all in will yield a grill 10x better quality than anything you could get new. I’m still using my 90s grill 7 years after I got it
I have one of these. 26 years old and still works great. Replaced a bunch of parts but she’s a survivor
gorbrickon
Absolutely!! Did you get it yet?
HolidayShip6702
For fifty bucks on a working Genesis, I’d say go for it since they’re built to last.

My son just lost two old genesis like this. Storms, a tree fell hitting his house and crushing everything on the patio.
Aggressive_Key5504
Buying that is a no-brainer period
I bought one in worse condition and upgraded the burners and stainless steel flavorizer Bars and stainless steel grates gave it a good degreasing and then finish it off with Griots, window polish and it is absolutely spectacular.Go for it
