Are approximately 37 thousand (37.228,6 to be exact) tons of olive oil that Italy imported from Tunisia in the first 4 months of the new campaignIt is not known whether this is extra virgin, virgin, or lampante oil, although exports from the North African country indicate that almost 90% of the entire exported volume is extra virgin. our country is the second largest importer after Spain which has acquired 59 thousand tons of it.
These are the data that emerge from the report of theNational Observatory of Agriculture of Tunis (Onagri), which highlight how olive oil exports, in 4 months taken into consideration, have reached the remarkable figure of 184.300 tons, almost 50% more than the 123.200 of the same period of the previous campaign. The whole thing brought in 2,263 billion Tunisian dinars, which is equivalent to about 670,6 million euro.
It is about the almost all bulk oil, equal to 88,5% of exports, although it should be highlighted a growth in packaged products, which rose to 11,5% compared to 10,2% last year, in line with the Tunisian government’s strategy which, in intercepting new markets, aims to give greater added value to the product, and consequently to the producers, by presenting themselves with their own labels.
On the front of prices, in fact, the increase in volumes does not register a similar growth in prices. Last February the average price of Tunisian olive oil was quoted at 12,01 dinars per kilogram, equal to approximately 3,56 €, against 12,51 dinars, approximately 3,71 euros, a year earlier, and therefore with a decrease of 4%. Depending on the category, Prices range between 9,22 dinars per kilogram, approximately 2,73 euros, and 16,07 dinars, approximately 4,76 euros.
Regarding the countries to which Tunisian oil is destined, in addition to the aforementioned primacy of Spain ahead of Italy, significant volumes were recorded in the United States (where 15,4% of the oil was stored), while 12,8% was sent to Asian countries and 6,6% to African countries.
The National Observatory of Agriculture of Tunis (Onagri) also records the good performance of the organic segment, with 22.300 tons Exported abroad, worth 297,7 million dinars, equivalent to approximately 88,2 million euros. Even here, however, packaged products remain marginal, with a share of 8,3%. The average price of organic products is 13,32 dinars per kilogram, approximately 3,95 euros, with a marked difference between loose products, 12,78 dinars, approximately 3,79 euros, and packaged products, 19,32 dinars, approximately 5,73 euros. Italy becomes the leading buyer of organic products grabbing around 10 thousand tons, overtaking Spain, which was then followed by the United States and France.
