So Fellow published the 2nd gen Opus. The lead designer writes on his personal page that he came on board of Fellow when the gen 1 was well on its way and he couldn’t alter it a lot. He took the gen 2 to the drawing board and it looks like they addressed some of the major flaws of the gen 1.

One of the biggest flaws was the 2 step grind size adjustment system, the gen 2 has a stepless adjustment dial. Also the burrs have gotten a nice upgrade, from 40mm to 48mm. It is supposed to have very little retention when single dosing, which should very well be possible with conical burrs. Then it comes in a whole bunch of colours. Most notably, the price is set at $199.95. The first Opus was in the budget category, too, but was generally disliked on this platform.

Do you think the gen 2 will become a succes and staple like e.g. the Encore? What downsides do you expect? Have you already tried one?

As far as I know the grinder has not actually shipped so no one can really answer your questions yet.

If it lives up to expectations it probably will be the grinder to beat under $200, but no one knows if it will or not.

I’m a little confused why they don’t have a blow up hopper on the top. I get that they did a complete redesign, but would it definitely help with reducing retention?

Fellow always nails the aesthetics, but I’m curious to see real-world retention tests. They promised low retention on the Gen 1 too, but static was a nightmare for a lot of people.

I certainly won’t be buying it after how bad the first one was. I hated mine so much I haven’t sold it because I feel like I would be scamming someone and I haven’t given it away because I would feel bad causing pain for somebody.

But it cost a lot and there might be a way to make it less bad in the future so it’s in the cupboard.

The issue seems to be very common and I imagine why it’s been redesigned. Any beans I use of any age or roasting get super retained in this thing. It looses a lot each grind. If you dont take it apart and clean its out fully every few grinds, it clogs up and it’s usable. It then takes ages to clean out

Hello! I’m Hailie, and I’m on the coffee team at Fellow. I’ve had a test unit on my personal brew bar for some time, and have tested many other units in service (at tradeshows, etc.)

I’d be happy to answer questions you have about Opus 2, to the best of my ability. Just wanted to post here to open up communications!

I bought the expensive pour over scale from them when it came out, it’s so tricky tacky on the buttons that I won’t leave it out for others to use. It’s been glitchy since day one and got very little support but a whole lot of nonsense so no more for me.

Too expensive for the espresso proletariat peasant like me. It looks very nice though.

If I knew this was coming out, I would’ve bought it and tried it. I am assuming that everyone’s complaints on these got addressed on the second version.
I instead pre-ordered the Timemore Bricks 01s for a bit over $200. Regularly $279 but there’s an early bird 20% discount.
