Oreos may be one of the most nostalgia-inducing treats on the market. Whether enjoyed as cookies and cream ice cream, dirt cake, chocolate-coated truffles, deep fried at a fair, or simply with a glass of milk, Oreos are something so many of us grew up eating.

Today, Milk’s Favorite Cookie goes far beyond the classic chocolate wafers and crème filling. You’ll find dozens of flavors, special collaborations, and co-branded products—like frozen treats, cereal, and baking mixes. However, nearly as nostalgic as the classic cookie itself are the Oreo Cakesters that many of us had in our lunch boxes.

The snack cakes, which are reminiscent of gobs or whoopie pies with cake-like cookies sandwiched with cream, were released in the early 2000s, but discontinued in the 2010s. However, in 2022, Oreo brought back its Cakesters with a new recipe, which some fans have said made them “not as amazing as they used to be.”

So, Oreo went back to the drawing board for its cookies and crème snack cakes and has re-released the iconic Cakesters with a new recipe.

Oreo has revamped its entire Oreo Cakesters line with a new recipe that makes the snack cakes softer than before. The crème itself isn’t changing, just the two outer Oreo-flavored cakes to make them pillowy soft. Now, the Cakesters will be more like a traditional snack cake, like those sold by Little Debbie or Hostess, rather than a regular Oreo cookie.

Oreo says the new recipe will be used to make its Original Oreo Cakesters, Golden Oreo Cakesters, and Double Chocolate Oreo Cakesters, which will be sold in three- and 10-packs and can be found in your grocery store’s snack cake or cookie aisle.

With the new recipe, it does seem like we’ve seen the demise of two soft-baked Oreo treats. Neither the Peanut Butter Cakesters nor the newly announced Confetti Cake Cakesters seem to be making a return with the new recipe—despite Oreo calling them permanent additions to the line when they were launched.

Some customers had called the peanut butter-filled snack cakes “just ok” or “a skip” altogether, so that may have fueled Oreo’s decision. However, the confetti cake-flavored Cakesters had positive reviews, with one social media user calling them the “BEST Cakesters they’ve ever made.”

The three newly reformulated Oreo Cakesters flavors are hitting retailer shelves now. You can look for the “Now even softer cake!” banner on the packaging to denote the change. And, if the Peanut Butter and Confetti Cake Cakesters are, in fact, being discontinued, you might want to buy your last few boxes now before it’s too late.
