Two South African wines from Marks & Spencer this week. Both are from Swartland, a region once regarded as only useful for growing wheat. But then a few of South Africa’s top growers saw the potential of the hot, dry climate and mixed soils, and began to produce some of the country’s finest wines. The best white wines are usually made from chenin blanc and the reds from syrah blends.

The featured chenin blanc is made from old bush-trained vines owned by the 22 families behind the wine. The Koopraas is a blend of syrah, mourvèdre and viognier grapes. Both cost a little more than our typical weekend wines, but they are worth the extra few euro.

Medium-bodied with creamy, rich cantaloupe melon and pear fruits finishing dry. I would serve this alongside richer fish dishes; salmon, prawns, or scallops would be great.
