❤❤❤ for Tuck!!! I use your garden soil recipe in my beds and containers. I get the best results every time! I use organic shredded straw as a mulch for most of my beds and containers. It provides a great covering over the soil and keeps it from drying out after watering. Happy gardening everyone!
Hey James! I've been a container gardener for 25 years! Thanks for the tips in your videos. I enjoy watching and learning new stuff from your garden. Have a wonderful and productive year!
<3 for Tuck!
Hands down, YOU, are the best provider of gardening information on YouTube!
Hi James. Do you reuse the soil you made for your buckets at the of the growing season?
Containers are the way to go for the short term. North Jersey expecting a freeze warning still for late April. Sure its always "possible" but crazy we ever actually get temps that low still. Containers make it easier to move them inside when night temps are still too low.
Growing in buckets is extremely suboptimal. They are very brittle and only last 1 year in high sun environments. Grow bags are more economical, better lasting and the better for your plants. Skip the trailer park bucket method and go straight to grow bags.
I've been container gardening for 4 years now and I love it for all the reasons you mentioned, plus I have limited areas in my yard with adequate sun and containers make it easier to garden in those spots. Instead of potting up the containers in their final spot, I use a garden cart and fill my containers while they're in the cart, take them to their spots and then water fully/plant. The other plus of the mulch on top, helps to prevent water from splashing onto the plants and also helps prevent soil borne disease. This year, I'm going to try and figure out a way to DIY ollas to keep my container soil better hydrated during the hot summer months as well as doing more companion planting in them.
Making your own soil is a waste of time and money. Just buy Sunshine Mix #4. It costs LESS than straight peat moss but has perlite/mycorrhizae aleady mixed in and is PH buffered. 6 cubic feet for 35$ at Lowes. Every hydroponic store will also carry this.
I may try to overwinter my peppers this year; I didn’t realize that they can be perennial. With all the diseases in my yard, I may just stick with container gardening for a while. Also, ❤ for the Tuck flashbacks.
Thank you James! Question for ya. If I don't have a leaf mulcher, what is another way by hand to chop them up? I am tearing them by hand but some of the pieces are still pretty big. I don't need or use a lot so I'm usually saving some in small pots and then breaking them up when I need them.
4:25 mixing??? I use a third garden soil a third compost and a third native soil( very sandy but dense indeed)
5:45 diatomaceous earth?
Hi James, Love your channel! Just wondering, I only have organic raised bed soil, can I still have a good harvest even if that’s the only soil I have? Im growing in buckets on a balcony in my apartment!
Just in time! I was thinking about doing this due to deer eating everything; so putting containers on my deck would be a solution. But I'm thinking the stinky fishy fertilizer would chase them away. Now, what to do about the squirrels eating plants?
I've never been able to successfully grow tomatoes in containers. When I plant them in my raised beds, they do great. Containers, not so much.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and you are an inspiration. Love seeing Tuck! ❤
❤❤❤
I like grow bags because they are dirt cheap.
The most important thing- live in zones 5,6 or 7. You'll thank me later 😉
How do you feel about Spinosad and BT?
Soil mix looks solid! Hey what do you use for ipm? I have some ideas but wanted to know how you roll.
Love this !!!!!
❤ for Tuck!!
I think this is actually my favorite video from you, especially the horrendous smell from the fish emulsion, I found that one out the hard way, outdoors only 😅
❤
Hello There! Great video about container gardening. My question is are grow bags as good as plastic containers for my vegetable plants. Thanks for all of your info on growing. Mack
Ok, you say no soil, other garden youtubers say to make sure to use soil. You said in another video not to plant basil with corn. Other youtube gardeners say basil deters corn specific pests. I wish y'all would get together and agree. I switched from potting mix to soil, now i should switch back?
James, this is the first video of yours that has popped up on my feed in SO long and I was so happy to see it. I thought maybe you just weren't producing content anymore and now I see it was just the algorithms that were messing with me. I've not been growing anything for a few years now due to medical issues a few years ago and having moved into a new spot where we have very little space and NO outdoor water lines (yet, but working on changing that soon). Can't wait to dive in and catch up on all of your content I've missed.
You know what grow bags are good for? I have rehydrate coco coir with water mixed with activated EM1. Then I place the coco coir in a big grow bag & mix them occasionally. The grow bags allows oxygenation & drainage.
By the time I’m ready to make my potting mix, the coco coir is nice & dark, teeming with good soil life.
James, I’ve been watching you last past few years and thank you for your sharing. You explained well and your content is especially clear step by step helped me tremendously with my little backyard. You’re a natural teacher 💙
You use Miracle Grow? That's Monsanto GMO demon shit!
Grow bags are 4 hundred and forty nine times better than a white plastic bucker and cheaper
