Maangchi is the goat of Korean cooking videos.

I have a very unpopular opinion…
On the one hand, she had and continues to have a huge influence on introducing Korean cooking to the world, and that is great.
What I am slightly (very slightly) nitpicking is some of the details of her cooking.
A couple of examples I have noticed very early on are: – she adds water to soondooboo jjigae; properly, the water is supposed to come out of the silken tofu. – she adds ginger to beef dishes; _traditionally_ Koreans do not use ginger with beef
Now… a lot of Koreans are going to disagree, and even celebrity chefs in Korea, like Baek Jong Won does the same thing. And yeah, I don’t really enjoy his cooking either. And yes, cuisines evolve and Koreans do the above these days. But I can’t help but think these changes happened because of the few people who become popular, rather than what used to be the norm. I feel the same way about how Korean restaurant foods have become too sweet because of social media and other minority influencers with majority followers.
I feel like an old person saying these things. I do like most of the recipes, and I do like that so many people outside Korea are cooking Korean food, in whichever way they like.
I guess, as K-culture becomes popular, I am understanding how some Italian people feel when cooking videos advise people that they can substitute certain ingredients that are defining of certain dishes.

Yeah, I like her recipes because she hardly uses msg. (Oh no, here comes the msg police. lol)

She’s a year older than my mom. All of her food reminds me of my mom’s home cooking, something which I don’t get much of anymore (she’s a nurse). Makes me feel cozy inside 😊

She has been a favorite of mine for years. She was actually a gamer before she took on YouTube at the suggestion of her son. Maangchi is her gamer name. Interesting significance of that name.
