I had this for the first time last Saturday while visiting Songdo for the first time and I have to say… I need this on my weekly food plan now! Sadly I dont think I can make e at home but I am looking for different places in Seoul to try it, because I heard a lot of restaurants prepare it differently. I forgot what this is called exactly, is like a soup with a whole chicken inside filled with rice. Anyone knows any good places around Seoul that serve it?

Samyetang? It’s my favorite it’s literally everywhere. You can make it at home quite easily I learned it in a couple of hours for 1/4 of the price at nice restaurants. Love it especially when it’s cold. So delicious
Is this samgaetang? Someplace serve it with abalone and a octopus in it too. I forgot the name too lol sorry

Samgyetang is mostly something we eat out rather than cook at home. You can find it almost anywhere in busy areas, and like you mentioned, the taste varies a lot from place to place. Some places simmer the broth with medicinal herbs, giving it a strong herbal flavor, while others even give you a free shot of ginseng wine. I really hope you get to try the North Korean style Samgyetang (mostly called Samgye-baekban). There’s a restaurant near Gyeongbokgung Palace called ‘무구옥 (Muguok)’ that serves it. Definitely worth the long wait. The way it’s served is quite different from the typical South Korean style, so highly recommend it. There’s another branch in Seongsu-dong. 광계(Gwanggye) in Yeonnam-dong is good too!

Mine always has roots and dried stuff and antlers and im never quite sure what to chew up or leave behind.

‘Young yang center’ in Myumgdong is a very old shop which sells this before it became common.
‘Bakje Samgyetang’ is also old and famous in Myungdomg.
토속정 also famous but i dont prefer its style.
Samgyetang is easy to make.
And you should try ‘dark hanmari’ in Dongdaemun. It is similar but easier to make.
