Winemaker Alessio Di Majo Norante from the eponymous winery in the Molise region has passed away at the age of 63 after a long illness. With him, the Italian wine scene loses a formative personality who, like few others, has influenced the development and international perception of viticulture in the southern Italian region of Molise.
Just a few days before his death, he participated – marked by his illness – in the trade fair Vinitaly in Verona. His appearance was not least a farewell to companions for whom viticulture meant more than a profession, but a community.
The Di Majo Norante winery, whose history dates back to the 19th century, was continued by him in the tradition of his father Luigi and at the same time shaped by modern influences. On about 123 hectares of vineyard area in the historical possession of the family, he consistently combined traditional methods with research and further development. His goal always remained the preservation of the characteristic properties of Mediterranean wines.
In addition to the successful positioning of his own business on an international level, his merit is primarily the revitalization of the entire viticulture in his home region. Through his commitment, his professional competence, and his openness to cooperation – among others with renowned oenologists like Riccardo Cotarella – he contributed to the establishment of the region as a source of high-quality wines.
