Hi everyone! My birthday is coming up this weekend and I’d like to put some money down for a nice bottle to celebrate. I work as a packer in a wine warehouse and I’m able to purchase for 75% of wholesale price, so I took a look through our “high end” section and took some photos of all the bottles I’d be interested in. Here wondering if you all have had any of these/have any input!

I know the Raen is killer. Very drinkable.

I’m partial to Bordeaux so the Angelus and Margaux speak to me, but there are some incredible Italian wines here too.

2005 Margaux is one of the best wines I’ve ever had. 2011 is a lesser Vintage but won’t be bad by any means and will cost far less.

My pea brain says that if you get a massive discount you should buy a more expensive bottle that way you save more money lol

My vote is for the ‘22 Chave Blanc on the basis that it will be most (emphasis on most) approachable now with a few hours of oxygen. The Chave blancs I’ve tried are some of the best whites I’ve ever drank. Unquestionably a great lineup to choose from, especially those ‘21 Barolo, however I like to give Barolo 8-10 years+ of time to see them really take shape and while some of course may be approachable now, you may run the risk of them being a little sleepy. With that, most of these are on the younger side notwithstanding the fact this is a hell of a lineup, and you can never go wrong with Chave.

Let the Chave breathe and let us know your thoughts!

    75% off Margaux

    Yes please.

Hard to beat anything from Rionda

Wow, there are some incredible wines here.

Personally I’d be looking at either the Chave Hermitage blanc or the 2018 Giuseppe Quintarelli.

I guess it depends on what you normally like to drink?

Those are all infants, especially the Chave. Marsanne and Roussanne are known to age gracefully for decades and they are well worth the wait! So know this going in. You’ll probably need at least an hour decant with any of these. Likely more. That said, they’re all stellar bottles too. I’d be tempted to go for the oldest I saw, the 2004 Barolo, or maybe a Raen or Quintarelli as those can shine in youth. If you have multiples of all these then open one of each and have one hell of a birthday!

2004 Oddero and not even close in terms of ready to drink the 2004 vintage was spectacular and Rionda is a top Cru.

The Chave for me. Also, the Margaux

    Chave hermitage blanc for sure

Not the 23 Rostaing Cote Blonde, which I had a couple of weeks ago. Great wine, but it needs a lot of time. (It was a review sample with a critic, so we knew it would be ridiculously young but that’s what it was there for.)

Oddero. Else, pick one of the other Barolos, else else, the Raen.

Oddero is the only ready bottle so if your birthday is coming up soon…

I’d pick based on what I’d want to eat. But probably Quintarelli or Oddero. I am just such a sucker for aged quality Barolo. Some of that Rhone stuff is pretty banging too tho. But honestly this is all pretty great and just really more about what your preferences are.

People keep saying the Chave Blanc, but I find them VERY opulent when young. My vote is the ‘04 Odderro by a mile.

Ca’ De Merlo for me from this bunch, will be mostly ready and very enjoyable. I’ve had some real variable experiences with that Oddero over the years and vintages, otherwise I’d send you there.

There are a lot of good wines BUT if these were my bottles, I’d go for 04 Odder Barolo, as this one is nearing peak and others are not even close.

Farconnet Hermitage Blanc 2020 from JLC sélection.
Not as fancy as some of the other bottles but will be amazing regardless.

Some other bottles are great like the Hermitage Blanc from JLC but wayyyyy too young. Definitely better to keep it to enjoy it in 5 to 10 years.
Almost all the others need 3 to 5 years minimum as well.

  19. I always appreciate posts like these because it reminds me that however much I am learning and however nice I think my collection is growing, there’s always levels to this ish. 😂

I’d go for one of the Barolos
