While visiting my grandfather’s town in Abruzzo I stopped for a lunch, tour, and tasting at Emidio Pepe. I really enjoy Montepulciano D’Abruzzo wines. But I haven’t quite developed a palate for wines. I’m young and learning. The staff were rather curious about how I even found out about them. I didn’t know much about their wine before arriving. I had read some threads on what wine I should bring back and Emidio Pepe was recommended frequently.

This was my first tour of winery. I’ve been on several distillery and brewery tours but never a winery. It was to say the least a great experience all around. The lunch was a 7 course meal using only local ingredients. I enjoyed the dessert so much I almost forgot to take picture. The food was incredible.

Now for the wine. Through the courses I tasted the following in order. 2024 Trebbiano, 2021 Trebbiano, 2024 Pecorino, 2022 Pecorino, 2023 Montepulciano, and 2003 Montepulciano. All of which were greatly enjoyed. It was interesting drinking a wine that was almost as old as me.

Their Montepulciano was different from any others that I’ve had. In a good way. I wish I knew how to describe the notes. But I ended up buying 6 bottles to take home. Well worth it after seeing what it costs in the US.

  1. Thanks for sharing, because they are on my bucket list to visit! How did you get in touch for this visit?

Absolutely sick tour though I haven’t really had their wines they are on my radar

  3. that’s crazy that the winery doesn’t know about Pepe’s highly-esteemed (almost legendary) status among winos! I didn’t even think they would even give tours or tasting to those who don’t make appointments & aren’t in the trade. Is it run like a agriturismo b&b?

My grandfather was also from Abruzzo! And this happens to be one of my favorite producers in Italy irrespective of the aforementioned. Incredible trip and probably a bucket list item for myself given it’s not easy to travel to.

Great place! Stayed there while on vacation and had a wonderful time. Glad you enjoyed it. We did the 7 course dinner and it was great. If you can get their aged trebbiano I would highly recommend!

Wow, hell of a winery to visit as a newcomer! I’m envious—I adore Abruzzo wines and have never had a chance to taste Emidio Pepe.

Very cool spread they have up there at the winery.

Had a bottle couple years ago, strong menthol notes. Definitely very unlike any other montepulciano I’ve had, and I’ve had quite a few.

that pictures of all the unmarked bottles stacked up is wild. I didn’t know what I was looking at for a second
