Valley River Center fans just got a new place to dine. When Souper Bowls closed in January, foodies wondered what would fill its spot in the mall’s food court.

But we don’t have to wonder any longer.

Oh My Cod opened April 1, brought to diners by the same family who ran Souper Bowls, and who continue to run Christina’s Philly Steaks next door. On opening day, a crowd of hungry diners filled the food court, waiting to get a bite of what the new restaurant has on offer.

As the name suggests, Oh My Cod is a fish and chips spot specializing in baskets. The menu allows customers to choose between different proteins that pair with their fries, such as cod, catfish, halibut, coconut shrimp or regular shrimp. Sides of chowder and coleslaw are also on the menu, as well as fish sticks, waffle fries and fried pickles.

“The reason we decided to do something new was that we wanted to see if we could offer something a little bit different,” Elana Gilliam, daughter of owner Christopher Gilliam, said. In addition to the food stall next to Oh My Cod, the Gilliam family also owns More Boba in Springfield.

“When we were operating Souper Bowls, things got really difficult with staffing, so this lets us make great food and continue to serve the community without` having to do as much prep,” Elena Gilliam said. “And customer feedback to the new food has been really great so far.”

Elana Gilliam said Souper Bowls customers who missed seeing friendly faces and filling up on high-quality food have been excited to try the new concept. She said the catfish basket, coconut shrimp basket and chowder have been the top sellers so far.

Oh My Cod is in the Valley River Center food court at 293 Valley River Center in Eugene. Restaurants are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
