With hotels in some of the world’s most fashionable locations, including London, Melbourne and Ibiza, one might wonder why Hyde chose the Western Australian capital as the location for its latest hotel, but as Hyde Perth general manager Rhys Challenger explains, Perth was a natural fit.
“With its appetite for music and culture, Perth was identified as a prime location,” says Challenger, who draws parallels between Perth and Hyde’s city of origin, Los Angeles.
“Hyde began in 2005 as Hyde Lounge on the Sunset Strip, so there’s that link to Perth as a city also famous for its sunsets, with that similar climate and love of outdoor culture.”
Hyde Perth’s interior designer, Sarah Townson of Ark Capital, visited LA to gather inspiration firsthand – resulting in the transformation of the shell of a late 1960s building into a space shaped by natural light, richly-grained timbers, and warm tones that reflect Hyde’s sun-kissed Californian heritage while also paying homage to the Western Australian landscape. Shades of red, orange and lilac echo this colour palette and act as a reference to both cities’ famous sunsets.
As for the influence of LA’s music scene (specifically early 2000s club tunes) had on the hotel, Challenger says it’s evident as soon as you walk in the door.
“We consider ourselves an oasis in the middle of the city with an energy that flows from the music, lighting and event spaces to artwork and thoughtful design such as the ‘endless couch’ that takes you from the bar to the lobby where there could be a DJ playing on a Friday afternoon.”
Beyond the lobby, Hyde Perth’s rooms and suites align with the brand’s signature bohemian luxury style. Earthy tones, handcrafted Pampa rugs, and custom furnishings, including cushions from Jimmy Pike, Patricia Braune, and Grace Garret, add warmth and lived-in elegance to the space.
All rooms and suites come with Bose speakers, Chromecast and Lavazza coffee machines, while bathrooms are fitted with rainfall showers and are stocked with Bumble and Bumble hair products. In the premium platinum suites, guests are provided with a separate living area. Meanwhile, the very LA all-access poolside suites offer direct access to the pool area, restaurant and bar.
Headed by executive chef Aaron Moore (ex-Bread in Common and Coogee Common), Farra is Hyde Perth’s food and beverage offering that flows across three separate yet connected spaces – the dining room, pool bar and terrace. Inspired by Perth’s Mediterranean climate and Moore’s own memories of the Greek Islands where he began to cook, Farra’s focus is on Grecian-inspired dishes and drinks, and picks up on the reemergence of Greek restaurants we’ve seen in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide in recent years.
Expect share-style hot and cold meze platters, larger fire-led protein dishes like slow-roasted lamb shoulder, and whole line-caught fish, and a wine list that centres around Greek and broader Mediterranean producers, with the inclusion of a tight Western Australian edit.
