CHARLESTON — A new Italian restaurant has debuted on the ground floor of the Greystar Corporate Headquarters building.
V Modern Italian Restaurant is now open at 465 Meeting St., taking over the 6,305-square-foot space previously occupied by The Select.
The new Charleston establishment is built to be a dinner spot that morphs into a drinks destination as the night goes on. These types of food and beverage venues are prevalent across Europe, where the restaurant group behind V Modern is based.
As for the food, menu development was led by chef Stefano Ciotti, best known for earning a Michelin star at Nostrano in Italy. While that establishment focuses on precisely plated, small-portioned, ingredient-driven cuisine, V Modern’s food can be easily split among the group, feeding into the restaurant’s communal dining experience.
A meal might commence with oysters, char-grilled and crowned in herby, toasty breadcrumbs. The half-dozen shells share the starter spotlight with meatballs, bruschetta and burrata, which bobs in a puddle of sauce infused with limoncello and truffle oil.
Shareable items include V Modern’s selection of sourdough pizzas. Toppings range from black truffle tapenade and garlic-roasted portobellos to the “sweet hot Italian” with spicy soppressata sausage, chili-infused honey, olive oil, mozzarella, red onion, chili threads, Parmesan, rosemary and thyme.
Order one of the 13-inch pies as your main course or snag one for the table so diners can have a slice with their lobster ravioli, chicken Parmesan or pork chop with roasted peaches. The scampi moderni showcases the merits of V Modern’s pasta program, the cavatappi corkscrews coated in a tomato-based sauce enhanced by lobster stock, shallots and cream.
