On Saturday, May 9, neighbors across the region will have a simple chance to help fight hunger close to home.The National Association of Letter Carriers is hosting its 34th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Since 1993, the effort has collected nearly 2 billion pounds of food for families in need.Residents are asked to fill grocery bags with nonperishable food and leave them by their mailbox before mail delivery. Letter carriers will pick up those donations and deliver them to Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia for local distribution.The need is urgent. More than 47 million Americans face food insecurity, and summer can be especially difficult for children who depend on school meals. Second Harvest says donations from this drive will help stock shelves ahead of its Summer Feeding Program, which begins June 1 at about 75 locations.With support from Wawa and The Wawa Foundation, 100,000 blue donation bags were distributed across the community to encourage participation.Second Harvest CEO Miriam Langley says every donation stays local and helps serve neighbors across the organization’s 21-county service area.
