PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Tasting Table released a list of the 14 best French bakeries in the United States, naming one Portland bakery whose croissants are “the best around.”

“If there’s anything out there that’s more satisfying than walking into a top-tier bakery, we haven’t found it. There’s something magical about those piles of freshly baked breads, the colorful pastries, the beautifully finished cakes and cookies. And the smell? Don’t even get us started about the smells. Any and all bakeries are wonderful, but French bakeries are above and beyond,” Tasting Table wrote.

The outlet said it created the list of the best French bakeries in the U.S. based on places serving traditional goods found in France, along with those receiving accolades from the Michelin Guide or the James Beard Foundation and bakeries run by those who have a background living or training in France.

With three Portland locations — in Northwest Portland, Sellwood-Moreland and along Northeast Broadway — Twisted Croissant’s co-founders say the bakery was established by a “shared love for butter, flavor and culinary mischief.”

Tasting Table lauded Twisted Croissant’s menu — which brings new flavors every season and offers a variety of croissants, cruffins, donuts, quiches and cakes.

“Those in the know expect to find incredibly creative interpretations of classic items on a menu that’s always changing, and have previously found things like corn bread croissants, croissants turned into Monte Cristo sandwiches, and the bakery’s own cruffins. Those are a cross between a croissant and a muffin, and there’s a raspberry and rose version on the menu at the time of this writing. Past versions include a strawberry and a peach and ginger, and they’re just as good as you’re expecting them to be,” Tasting Table wrote.

“Customers say the menu items sit somewhere in the intersection of art, baking science, and engineering, with flawlessly executed pastries enveloping flavorful fillings. The croissants are regularly lauded as being the best around, and visitors should keep in mind that it’s entirely possible they’ll sell out. Get there early, and be sure to get the chocolate,” the outlet continued.

In an Instagram post, Twisted Croissant said the bakery is honoroed to be named in Tasting Table’s list.

“Twisted Croissant began with a simple obsession: to create pastries that are thoughtful, refined, unexpected, and made with care. This recognition is a reflection of our entire team’s dedication, creativity, and relentless pursuit of excellence,” Twisted Croissant’s Instagram post says.
