For years my mom has been trying to figure out what "stars" are in this old family recipe. If anyone has any idea, it would be greatly appreciated <3

Transcript in case it’s hard to read:
Galaxie Cookie, from the kitchen of Ida Wedin
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup white syrup
    1 tbsp. butter
    4 cups stars
    1 cup salted peanuts
Mix syrup, sugar, & butter in a saucepan. Cook until sugar dissolves & mixture bubbles. Do not overcook. Remove from heat & add peanuts & stars. Drop by spoonful onto wax paper. Cool

I think it must be chocolate stars. Brach’s makes chocolate stars, or at least used to.

I’m going to guess marshmallows? Although the heat thing makes me pause. it looks like peanut brittle without the baking soda/powder (can never remember which)

There’s a brand of flour called Star. Maybe that’s it?

Back in the ‘70s, Brach’s chocolate star candies were often called for in recipes that used melted chocolate. I don’t know why chocolate chips weren’t recommended, but I do know that Brach’s chocolate stars are not the same semisweet chocolate that most chocolate chips are. They taste more like a chocolate you would eat on its own, like Brach’s stars were intended to be eaten.

I’m thinking that this is a recipe for chocolate peanut clusters. The boiled brown sugar syrup and butter would definitely melt those stars and make a really nice cluster. I’m also thinking that they’re the chocolate stars because four cups of any other type of chocolate would be a LOT of chocolate. Four cups of the stars would be a lot less chocolate since the stars are larger and chops and there would be a lot more airspace in the cup with the stars.

Sounds like a really nice recipe. 😊

This would probably be a cereal, like cheerios. My mom has an almost identical recipe that calls for plain cheerios and she would make them for us as after school treats, I love the idea of using star shaped cereal though, it would be really cute!
