President William Ruto brought both humour and substance to his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, weaving lighthearted remarks into a day of serious agreements.

At the start, he joked, “Tomorrow at the dinner, we will be serving some Kenyan tea that looks like French wine,” a line that drew laughter from the audience and underscored Kenya’s pride in its tea exports while acknowledging France’s global reputation for wine.

Ruto was speaking during a Kenya-France media briefing, where a landmark economic deal between the two countries was signed.

“We signed an agreement establishing a joint venture to develop and finance logistics and port infrastructure, an investment of USD800 million,” Ruto announced.

The agreement is expected to boost Kenya’s trade capacity, expand regional integration, and deepen economic cooperation with France.

Agriculture was another highlight.

Kenya’s tea industry, already a global leader, gained new ground with France.

“We signed an agreement to facilitate the purchase of premium purple tea varieties and promote Kenya’s speciality teas across French retail networks, creating opportunities for value addition and high income for our farmers,” Ruto explained.

This pact not only opens new markets but also promises better livelihoods for Kenyan farmers, positioning speciality teas as a premium product in Europe.

Beyond ports and tea, the leaders turned to technology.

“Another important agreement signed today supports Kenya’s digital transformation and connectivity, enhancing different arts in our space,” Ruto emphasised.

He highlighted flagship initiatives such as concert technopolies and the digital superhighway, which are driving innovation, competitiveness, and regional integration.

These projects reflect Kenya’s vision of building a dynamic digital economy that fosters creativity and positions the country as a hub for Africa’s digital future.

The agreements signed between Kenya and France represent a multi‑layered partnership: infrastructure investment to strengthen trade, agricultural cooperation to elevate farmers’ incomes, and digital transformation to propel innovation.

Ruto’s blend of humour and vision gave the proceedings a human touch, reinforcing the friendly ties between the two nations while showcasing Kenya’s pride in its products and its ambition in technology.
