Hi everyone! Recently I was so lucky as to be gifted a like-new ECM Classika PID because my step-FIL could never get it dialed in…which I’m now almost certain was due to not having a good enough grinder. It seems like all the reference material on this machine starts off by saying, “if your grinder sucks, you’ll know immediately,” and they’re right lol.

For context, I’ve been working as a barista for several years now but have never had a machine at home. The grinder pictured is our puny little Amazon one that we use for drip, but it absolutely cannot grind fine enough to work with this machine. Otherwise, it seems like I have everything set up in proper working order.

We do have a budget of at least a couple hundred dollars, but seeing as this was an unexpected gift, I really don’t feel comfortable dropping several hundred on a grinder right now…but I’m not sure which, if any, budget options are actually up to the job. I don’t want to waste the $200 on something that still won’t work if the true answer is that only the $300 option will get us a good result, for example. I put $250 as the ballpark in the title but I’m really conflicted on how to be financially responsible here while also not just wasting my time and money on something that still won’t be good enough.

Would love any and all feedback! Thanks everyone!

Edit: thanks so much to everyone! Y’all are so fast and informative! Happy to take on more suggestions but I certainly have enough to look into already!

Maybe something used from the Eureka Mignon catalog

  2. Baratza ESP Pro, Baratza Sette 270, DF54. Should really stretch the budget to get something better.

Kingrinder k6 is a great manual grinder in case you don’t do much coffee a day

I recently bought a d54 under kind of similar circumstances and have been very happy with it: easy to use, good build quality, good grind results, great price

Honest answer if all you can afford is $200 just grind some espresso at work and use it at home. It will be a bit stale but if you use a regular coffee grinder on that thing you’re basically going to be pulling nasty sour coffee shots out of a several thousand dollar machine

Well whatever it is it should be second hand IMO. Any brand new grinder for 200$ would be wasting too much of that machine.

  7. I agree with all the suggestions so far except the DF54, which I would avoid. Too much of a crap shoot.

Sette 270 in that price range, offers a ton of adjustment and power, for the trade off of being loud AF.

If you don’t mind turning the crank yourself, you can get incredible value from a manual grinder. I have a 1zpresso J-Ultra, and I’m so happy with it. Easy to clean, grinds 18g coffee in about 30 seconds, 8 micron adjustment means I can dial in any coffee to its sweet spot. Plus it is very quiet first thing in the morning, and occupies a very small space in the kitchen. Your money goes a lot further if you can do without the motor.

Shardor/Mokkom/Tuni 64mm flat burr grinder from Amazon. They’re $160-$200. They don’t have the best alignment out of the box but it should be far better than anything you’d get under $500. If you want to spend a lot more the Timemore 064s is usually ~$480 with whatever coupon they have.

Second hand / open box Eureka mignon

1zPresso K Ultra. Assuming you only have a couple shots, it’s totally manageable to hand grind.

ok, not to derail the conversation, but what is with this mindset where someone spends a considerable chunk of money on a machine, and uses a cheap grinder? I don’t get it. Like not trying to criticize your kind, generous FIL OP, but on the other hand he didn’t give *me* an ECM classica so I do feel my hands are relatively untied here.

Varia VS3 or DF54, depending on the burrs you want (conical vs flat) and the coffee you’ll most likely drink. I’ve had them both and can’t fault either two.
Retention on the VS3 is non-existent, and the DF54 is amazing on lighter roasts.
I found better results on darker/bolder roasts with the VS3 which is what I prefer drinking and sold the DF54.

If you don’t mind manual grinding, that would certainly be the best value solution. The J Series 1Zpresso, K-Ultra or a Kinu M47 would be absolutely killing it at that price point. I sometimes use my K-Ultra over my Philos for Espresso and I heard the same in regards to the M47. Plus the K-Ultra would double as a really, really good pour over grinder.
However, grinding anything lighter than medium is an absolute chore. So be warned.
If it has to be electric, check the small Femobook (A3?). Should be in budget and would give you killer espresso. The Baratza Encore ESP Pro is also really highly regarded and if you are in the US, their service is often very favorably mentioned.

On a budget the new opus 2nd gen has been great. I had the fancy X64SD it clogged, slipped and stop working. The opus 2gen was easy to use and it lived up to the hype. It’s a good starting place and allows me to save for a future grinder. And when I can afford my end game, the opus 2 will replace my opus 1 as the Aiden’s grinder. P.S. to others before you comment read “2nd GEN”, I have both it’s not like GEN 1 not even close, your criticism of GEN1 is fair, GEN 2 is totally different.

Get a Mazzer Super Jolly with manual doser off eBay, buy a small hopper and cleaning supplies and a good little scale for weighting your shots.

    This fits your budget squarely.

The Super Jolly easily produces a grind quality with stepless adjustments on the same level as a 2000,-EUR Mazzer and fits the ECM perfectly.

The only inconvenience will be either manually dosing (weighting) or living with grinding a quarter doser and using 1 or two day old grinds.

A Mazzer with electronic doser is out of budget (those usually go for 300+), have a weaker motor than the Super Jolly, grind slower and come with a PCB that just about now can go bad and is very expensive to replace (if you can find spares).

The Super Jolly will last forever and once you are ready for the next upgrade you will easily sell it on for at least what you paid for it.

I keep one of them on the counter just for French Press but have used it for espresso before getting another Mazzer with electronic doser.

Congrats on the machine. This one is nice.

  18. E55 Pro from AliExpress, with coupons you can get it around 170 USD and it blows the baratza and DF54 out of the comparison.

If you ever wanted a portable manual grinder, the 1Zpresso J ultra is better than “good enough”. I use mine 3 times a day for the last year and am so impressed. I don’t even use my high end electric grinder anymore.

It’s never a bad idea to have a manual hand grinder as backup anyway.

DF54 is the lowest entry point. Otherwise Facebook marketplace.

  21. throwaway1964972

Save some for a few weeks and buy a DF64.

  22. Sharp-Ad-9221

Take out a bank loan. This machine needs one!

  23. For a time being, you can mod your cheap burr grinder for finer grind. I’ve added aluminum duct tape under the burrs. There is a YT video. Search one of my post in the sub. Depending on how many layers you add, it may choke your machine. Good luck. And welcome to the home world! You’d be amazed how different it is from commercial machines 🤣 though yours won’t be too far off; except for the grinder, or beans, or water…

    Eureka Mignon Zero55s ~ 230€ 🫡

You could wait to see how the reviews are for the Fellow Opus 2. The original Opus wasn’t a hit; but it looks like the Opus 2 might be the grinder to beat at that price point.

  26. -super-hans

Are you in a large city? If so I’d check in marketplace there’s tons of cheap used options in my area

  27. Staletoothpaste

See if you can find eureka specialita for sale. I got my second hand… 3 years ago now(?), for ~$300. Worth every penny 🙂

  28. Mrdesuyo

If you can find one, you could get a eureka mignon zero 55s new for around 250
