BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A school bus driver in Boone County goes above and beyond to put her students’ safety and lives ahead of her own.
Lisa Cook, our latest Hometown Hero, encountered an incident outside of school that highlighted her selfless nature.
Jay Hill, director of school maintenance and facilities for Boone County Schools, explained what happened.
“One day, in between shifts, she was in her own personal vehicle,” Hill said. “And she noticed that a vehicle had went into the creek, at this time it’s a rising creek, just before you get to the local school at Brookview Elementary. And I happened to be following behind her, but by the time I got to the accident, she was already in the creek rescuing students, young students from the grade school, the elementary school, rescuing them to safety. She was in the creek, down in the water getting them out of the car. She actually handed them to me on the side of Route 3, and she made sure, without a doubt, that those kids were safe.”
Because of her efforts that day in the creek and her dedication behind the wheel of the school bus, Lisa Cook received the Boone County Schools Service Personnel of the Year award.
And she went on to become a WSAZ Hometown Hero.
