Decided to deep clean my puck screen for the first time in… a year. For the first time since I started using a puck screen, I decided to use my ultrasonic cleaner to clean it. Could have probably made another espresso with the amount of coffee that came out. Needed 3 cycles of 30 minute runs to clean it fully…

I gave up using that type of screen a couple years ago, way,way to hard to clean

Why are you deep frying your puck screen

I bought a $20 ultra sonic denture cleaner for this.

Also 3D printed a small ‘salt shaker’ that dispenses 1/8 of a teaspoon of Cafezza at a time.

Hot water from the HX flush goes in, toss the screen and basket in, hit the go button. 3 minutes is good.

You just cleaned off all the flavor

  5. Paper on top it is for me.. still have hundreds of aeropress papers. It doesn’t fit nicely but I just wet it and press it on the top of the puck.

I like to double fry after frying once and then freezing it. Much more body and texture with a smooth finish.

  7. That’s why I use a machined puck screen. No need for anything more than a rinse and a wipe.

I recommend tossing it in the trash. You’ll make much better coffee without one of these

I just use paper filters. Puck screens have too many headaches.

  10. Why are you even using one? They don’t do a single thing, but cause your pours to seem good when they really aren’t. Drop a puck on a flat space. If it cracks open, you have channelling. If it crumbles, you are good.

As for the cleaning, yes, we can all do with a bit more cleaning. I know I need to.

You could save cleaning these by not using them

  12. I’ve seen a hack somewhere, if you dont have a ultrasonic cleaner.. put your puck screen in your steam pitcher, and fill with water. Use your steam wand to inject air really close to the screen.. It works freaking amazing on the BBE we have at work. My gaggia, it works ok..

What ultrasonic? I bought one off Amazon for $60 and it was absolute garbage and I returned it

  14. Me thinking you could make chicken wings in this

I figure my shower screen is doing a pretty good job, the only thing I wanted a puck screen for was to eliminate the dozens of paper filters in my compost heap…
The sheet steel ones ~0.5mm fit that bill just fine.
If I want a smaller dose, I use a smaller basket.

Does nobody else clean theirs with the steam wand?

  17. I just soak mine in cafiza with my basket, portafilter and shower screen.

Instead of putting your stuff directly into the sonicator, put it in like a mug or cup with water. This is crazy behavior.

I have the super thin puck screen that doesn’t get dirty and is good as new after a quick rinse.

  20. You know espressos machines come with a puck screen built in yeah?

A quick wipe with a clean cloth and then regular back flushing looks after it.(with an espresso machine cleaner)

I don’t get why people put an additional layer of steel mesh inbetween.

Or use an Aeropress paper filter and throw it away.

  22. No you clean your puck screens a bit more often than that.
