A pizza joint in a popular part of Boston is shutting down after nearly three decades.
Woody’s Grill & Tap in Fenway will close after service Thursday night, May 28, owner JoAnn Cassidy confirmed to MassLive.
Cassidy, who owns the establishment with her husband Rich Guthrie, said they are “ready to start our next chapter.”
Cassidy told The Boston Globe that Woody’s has become “an impossible beast to manage” because of rising food costs, rent and utilities as well as mounting loans taken out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was a labor of love, but it was also a 30-year struggle,” she told the outlet. “It was never easy.”
Cassidy and Guthrie are now looking forward to spending more time with their family as they put their restaurant journey behind them.
“We need to support our family, and, you know, try to move into the next — our last — chapter of life,“ she told The Boston Globe. ”When you don’t take a seven-day vacation as a nuclear family for 25 years, it’s a burden.”
Woody’s Grill & Tap opened at 58 Hemenway St. in 1997, according to The Boston Globe. The neighborhood restaurant has been a go-to spot among locals and college students alike over the years.
The menu at Woody’s consisted of various appetizers, salads and sandwiches in addition to pizzas and meat, seafood and pasta entrees. Standout dishes included the Kitchen Sink pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, Romano cheese, Pig Rock Sweet Italian Sausage, pepperoni, white mushrooms, white onions and green peppers) and the Jamaican Jerk pizza (Gouda, red onion, grilled chicken and jerk sauce).
