Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon when a small plane crashed while trying to land at Sonoma Valley Airport in Northern California’s Wine Country, according to fire officials.

The crash was reported about 4:19 p.m. at the airport at 23980 Arnold Drive, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. The plane had departed from Auburn Municipal Airport and was coming into Sonoma Valley Airport when it crashed, said Mike Mulas, chief of the Schell-Vista Fire Protection District.

Three people were aboard the single-engine aircraft, authorities said. One person was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, another was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, and a third person refused transport.

The aircraft ended up across a levee at the airport, according to Sonoma Valley Fire District. Mulas said the plane came to rest in a field next to the runway.

The crash was confined to the airport, authorities said. The cause remained under investigation.

Sonoma Valley Airport, also known as Schellville Airport, is a privately owned public-use airport in Sonoma County. The airport, which has served the region since 1946, is known for vintage and veteran aircraft, according to its website.

Calls to the airport Wednesday evening were not answered.
