YORKTOWN — Prepare for the coming of the cracking of the Grana Padano cheese wheel — and bear witness to the event yourself.
Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace on Thursday, June 4 — National Cheese Day — will have a live 1 p.m. demonstration in its Yorktown Heights store, where a specialty cheese expert will “crack” open a huge cheese wheel of aged Italian Grana Padano. The store is at 327 Downing Drive.
“The Great Grana Crack,” a news release called it. And besides seeing how it’s readied, you can taste the cheese, too.

Samples will be shared, the release said, and store experts will provide entertaining and pairing ideas. “Taste their memorable balsamic vinegar, fresh Anjou pears, crackers, and other entertaining accompaniments,” the release said. “While you’re there, check out their vast array of Italian specialty foods, all made from scratch.”
Specialized, traditional blades and wedges are used to crack open a cheese wheel, with the idea to cleave the cheese along its natural curd lines instead of simply cutting straight through, according to the release. Almond Knives, which are distinctly shaped, short, and stubby knives, will be driven directly into the seam around the cheese wheel.
The demonstration is set to be done at nine Uncle Giuseppe’s locations Thursday, with the others on Long Island and in New Jersey.
