Things took a painful turn as Katie Lee Biegel cooked an old family recipe on the latest episode of her new YouTube cooking series, It’s Not Complicated.
During the Tuesday, June 2, episode, Biegel taught viewers how to make her Logan County burgers and oven-baked fries, inspired by her grandmother’s life in Logan County, West Virginia. Biegel launched It’s Not Complicated in February, following the end of her long-running Food Network series, The Kitchen, in December 2025.
Towards the end of the cooking process, Biegel decided to chop up some parsley as an extra garnish. “Ooh, goddammit!” she exclaimed. “Oh, I just cut my finger off.” Her husband, Ryan Biegel, helped her bandage and ice the wound.
“I have literally never ever cut myself chopping,” she remarked. “Well, let’s just eat some burgers. … So mad at myself. This is gonna take a long time to heal.”
Ryan finished assembling the burgers for her, but accidentally dropped one on the floor. “This entire episode is falling apart!” Ryan shouted, while Katie quipped, “I’m so glad that was you and not me!”
Ryan offered to eat the “floor burger,” and the episode ended with the couple enjoying Katie’s grandmother’s delicious dish. “How’s your finger?” he asked. She replied, “It’s OK,” noting that the burger was helping her feel “better.”
The episode of It’s Not Complicated was filmed back in March, as Katie shared the injury with her social media followers at the time. “In all my years of cooking, I have never cut myself. I sliced through my fingernail, like, cut my fingernail off, basically, while filming a new episode of It’s Not Complicated. So lovely,” she said in an Instagram Story video while showing off her injured finger, which was wrapped in a paper towel and plastic bag filled with ice cubes. “But it’s a good reminder for you guys to watch.”
She shared a clip of her kitchen mishap via Instagram on Monday, June 1, writing, “Happy to report that my finger has healed and @ryanbiegel survived eating a burger off of the floor.”
In a Tuesday Instagram post, Katie shared more details about the injury along with behind-the-scenes photos from filming the episode. “If I look like I have a pained expression on my face, it’s because I did…I nearly cut part of my finger off while filming,” she wrote. “Luckily, I was almost finished cooking and @ryanbiegel stepped in to help (even though he dropped a burger on the floor…and proceeded to eat it).”
Speaking of the recipe, she continued, “These are the burgers that I won the very first @nycwff Burger Bash with, and I added some bacon jam at Ryan’s request (side note: use the extra bacon jam to toss with pasta — amazing). People said these were a patty melt, not a burger (one chef even demanded a recount). We visited burger scholar @motzburger in this episode and he puts the argument to rest, they are, in fact, a burger.”
