MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – As we all deal with the rising cost of living, food insecurity might be threatening more people in Upper Michigan.
For those in need, the Salvation Army has several food assistance programs. Marquette-Alger-Baraga Salvation Army Social Service Manager Kristina Mutersbaugh says the Marquette pantry is open on Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“We’ve seen a recent rise in food insecurity and in the need,” Mutersbaugh said. “And we just don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t come and ask for help.”
The Salvation Army also runs a five-day-a-week lunch program in Marquette. Mutersbaugh says the meal is made daily, and no signup or call is necessary to attend.
“We just want to be here for them, we want to give them the food and to give them the support and know they’re not alone,” she said. “We’re here when you need it and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
Marquette Area Public Schools will also be running food assistance programs in the summer. Beginning June 22, kids ages 18 and under will be able to eat breakfast and lunch at Marquette Senior High School from Monday through Thursday. Meal packs for the weekend can also be picked up on Thursday.
“It’s at no cost to the families, we’re just asking that families use our google form to sign up just so we know how much food to produce,” Food Service Director Chris Collins said.
He says there will also be a meal pickup program at Vandenboom over the summer.
“It is the best part of our job being out and handing meals to the families and seeing how much they appreciate it,” Collins said. “A lot of times we see the students, but then during the meal handouts, we get to meet the parents as well.”
He says those interactions help staff form relationships with the community. To register or learn more about Marquette Area Public Schools’ food assistance programs, click here.
