The owner and chef behind a longtime French restaurant in Alexandria is introducing a new galetterie and crêperie in Alexandria this week.

Maison Breizh is a new concept launching behind Bastille Brasserie & Bar, with a “soft opening” starting tomorrow (June 4) at 1205 Pendleton Street. The galetterie’s eponymous menu item, the galette, is a French-style savory crepe made with a buckwheat-based batter.

The new culinary spot will offer cuisine inspired by the Brittany region of France. Chef and Bastille owner Michelle Poteaux is introducing Maison Breizh in hopes of showcasing a more casual aspect of French cuisine — “something rooted in craftsmanship and tradition, but still relaxed and approachable,” according to a release.

“I believe Alexandria — and the broader DMV dining scene — is ready for more nuanced regional French food beyond the usual stereotypes,” Poteaux said. “Brittany has an incredible culinary identity, and Maison Breizh is my way of bringing that spirit here in a way that feels fresh, honest, and welcoming.”

The new concept is inspired by the galettes that Poteaux first encountered in Cherbourg, Normandy, with her husband Christophe’s family.

The chef later participated in a hands-on program at Atelier de la Crepe, where she mastered how to make traditional galettes, crepes and Brittany cider while learning more about the region’s culinary culture.

In addition to the savory treats, crepes and other Brittany-inspired fare, Maison Breizh will also pour French cider and wine.

“After nearly twenty years of Bastille Brasserie & Bar, I found myself wanting to create something more casual, more regionally focused, and more reflective of the everyday French dining culture that often gets overlooked here in the DMV,” Poteaux said. “That idea became Maison Breizh at Bastille.”

Poteaux’s new creations will initially be available to try from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.
