The Wine Society has announced the launch of a Fine Wine Spotlight as it aims to make fine wine a central pillar of its long-term plans.

Starting with the Spain Fine Wine Spotlight, set to launch on 28 July, the retailer has planned a rolling calendar of regional fine wine campaigns.

It said this is part of its new strategy designed to expand, differentiate and redefine fine wine for UK consumers.

After Spain, The Wine Society will focus on Australia in October 2025, followed by Rhône and Italy in 2026.

In a series of staggered releases, the new collection will include over 50 new wines.

Alongside the campaigns, the retailer has also announced that it is actively recruiting for a new role: head of fine wine.

Wine buyer, Harriet Kininmonth, who is leading the project, said: “In my first year at The Wine Society, I’m excited to launch the first stage of this new fine wine focus. I’ve long admired Spain’s rich winemaking heritage and, even more, the wave of innovation redefining it as one of the most exciting, dynamic regions on the fine wine stage.”

On the Spanish focus, she said: “From Rioja I’ve selected rare and mature parcels that demonstrate just how beautifully Rioja can age, as well as an in bond offer of the 2021 Rioja vintage, which may be the best vintage in at least 20 years, and a 2024 release of two exceptional producers, Sierra Cantabria and Cuentavinas. Two wineries, father and son, bound by their precision and dedication to land but with contrasting vision and style.

“Beyond Rioja, I chose to focus on, Ribera del Duero and Galicia; within these selections I’m excited about the diversity of styles from the next generation of winemakers who are working with old, forgotten plots and approaching their land with fresh eyes and deep respect.”
