Road tripping with my daughter and detoured through New Haven on the way. Always wanted to try New Haven style Apizza, so this was our shot! Frank Pepere 1) pepperoni 2) margarita 3) spinach mushroom and Gorgonzola. Sally’s 4) tomato mozzarella 5) clam 6) white.
Full disclosure, I’m just a basic dude from the northeast with mediocre pizza. I’m not a pizza snob and generally like plain cheese to anything else. I’m also aware that the pizza’s from Pepere’s were saltier with bolder flavors. This is why we started with Sally’s and a clean palette.
I’m sorry if I offend anyone but this is how we felt about our experience. Rated from best to worst Margarita, Gorgonzola, peperoni, white, mozz, clam.
Overall, we felt like the pies from Sally’s just fell flat. They were bland and didn’t really have much flavor. Really liked the char, though. But the pies from Peperes were awesome and the margarita was phenomenal. Really great flavors from the cheeses, sauce and crust, definitely the best pizza we’ve had.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, can’t go wrong with any of “the spots” out there. Modern and Sally’s for me. The bacon pie and pizza in general at Abates is criminally underrated too never hear about them.
Man Frank Pepe is so mid compared to Sallys
They all look great but I think I would prefer the first set for my personal taste. Would destroy all of them.
Frank Pepe’s has the best pepperoni, it’s unreal
I love the look of that cheese. Do you know what it is?
1 and 4 look the best to me.
Sally’s will never not look like frozen, gas station pizza to me.
I honestly believe that if people saw it without the name attached, they would judge hard against it.
Modern >>>> also the sausage pie at zuppardi
Simply the best.
1-3 look solid. The rest, mehhhhh imo
You should try Little Rendezvous in Meriden. Their pizza is really good too
Modern is currently the best New Haven style pizza. Zeneli’s is napoli style but damn good and around the corner.
💩
Bacon and clams at Pepe’s with a pitcher of white birch beer.
That Marg looks pretty decent to me. Add some anchovies, we got a great pie!
Frank Pepe’s all the way! Sally’s is just hype. Modern is neck to neck with Frank Pepe’s
Pepe 4 Life
Not gonna lie all of these look so mid compared to my favorite spot here in southern Maine. When Pigs Fly pizza margherita with pepperoni, mushroom, or sausage as a single topping pie knocks these completely out of the park. I feel like there is a lot of hype behind New Haven style and I may stand corrected one of these days when I get down there and actually get to try it myself but based off this post these look not great compared to what I’ve seen come out of Sally’s and Pepe’s.
PS OP why do you keep calling it Pepere’s?
Yummmm omg
