The sale of a private collection from the USA achieved 3.23 million US dollars (around 2.8 million euros) this week at a Christie’s auction in New York. According to the organizer, the collection included “the largest offering of rare and aged California wines ever auctioned.”.
The auction titled “Exceptional Private Cellar of a Silicon Valley Pioneer” took place on June 5 at the Rockefeller Center and exceeded the lower estimate by 132 percent. Particularly high prices were achieved for Burgundy, American, and Italian wines as well as spirits.
The top lot was a six-pack of Domaine Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares 1971, which reached 100,000 US dollars, three times the upper estimate. The same amount was achieved by a lot of eleven bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1990. Other highlights from Burgundy included twelve bottles of Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis 1985 for 93,750 US dollars and ten bottles of Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 1985 for 81,250 US dollars.
Among the American wines, a six-bottle lot of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. 1973 fetched a price of 25,000 US dollars. Eight bottles of Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1974 were sold for 30,000 US dollars.
Chris Munro, head of the wine department at Christie’s America, stated that the “incredible” results reflected the excellent provenance of the wines, the discerning taste of the collector, and the strong global demand for the rarest wines in the world.
Spirits also sold successfully: A Van Winkle Kentucky Straight Bourbon Special Reserve with 19 years of aging went under the hammer for 20,000 US dollars.
