A popular Greek restaurant in Bergen County is temporarily closing its doors after it was heavily damaged by a fire June 11.
“We are currently closed at our Englewood Cliffs location. Our home was damaged, but our spirit is too strong,” Lefkes said in a post on Instagram. “We’re working hard to rebuild and will be back to serving you soon.”
In the caption of its post, Lefkes told customers to stay tuned for updates on its reopening.
The Englewood Cliffs Fire Department arrived at the restaurant at 495 Sylvan Ave. around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, and found heavy smoke. Due to challenging building features and weather conditions, the fire was quickly upgraded to a four-alarm fire, the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department said in a post on Facebook. Firefighters “successfully contained the blaze,” according to the post, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Fort Lee Fire Investigation Unit.
All roads in the affected area have since been reopened, the fire department said.
Lefkes, a Greek restaurant, takes guests “on a Mediterranean journey of flavors,” its website says, combining traditional Greek classics with a modern twist. Angela Thomas, a spokesperson for the restaurant, said that part of the building is demolished in the wake of the fire.
Thomas could not comment further on reopening plans, adding in an emailed statement, “it is too soon to discuss further plans, one step at a time.”
Shortly after Lefkes opened in 2018, former NorthJersey.com food writer Esther Davidowitz said that she was putting her money on the restaurant “becoming a fixture in the North Jersey dining scene.” She praised Lefkes for its refreshing cocktails and mostly delicious dishes, from zucchini and eggplant chips to meatballs, seafood, and “heavenly” desserts.
For updates on the restaurant’s reopening, you can keep an eye on Lefkes’ social media pages including Facebook and Instagram.
