WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will meet over dinner at the glittering Palace of Versailles near Paris after the G7 summit of leading industrialized nations next week in France, their governments announced Saturday.
Trump, who is trying to make progress on finalizing an Iran war deal in the coming days, is expected to have a busy schedule of one-on-one meetings with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the summit in the French lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains, according to senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House.
The Republican president is expected to discuss with U.S. allies plans to remove mines from the Strait of Hormuz as confidence grows for a deal, one official said.
Britain and France, both G7 members, have expressed interest in assisting with demining the critical waterway once the conflict is paused.
Trump also plans individual meetings on the sidelines of the summit, which opens Monday, with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and United Arab Emirates to discuss efforts to wind down the Iran war.
Macron’s office said the French president will host Trump for a dinner Wednesday to mark the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, at the Palace of Versailles, “a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship.”
The palace was the residence of French kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI. It regularly hosts heads of state and foreign dignitaries.
Macron hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla there in 2021 for the palace’s 400th anniversary, with a dinner in the Hall of Mirrors, one of the features of the 2,300 rooms in the palace.
In 2017, before his personal relationship with Vladimir Putin deteriorated because of the war in Ukraine, the then newly elected Macron hosted the Russian president at Versailles.
Trump and Macron will meet after the U.S. leader arrives in France on Monday afternoon. Trump will depart Washington after celebrating his 80th birthday with a primetime mixed martial arts show on the White House lawn Sunday.
Trump also plans separate talks with India’s prime minister, officials said. India, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt are attending the summit at Macron’s invitation because they are not G7 members.
Leaders of the G7 countries, which also include Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan, are meeting to discuss economic growth and development, strengthening supply chains for critical minerals, illegal immigration and artificial intelligence, among other issues.
The wars in Ukraine and Iran are also expected to be front and center. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also be at the summit. A formal meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is not currently scheduled, officials told reporters, though they could meet on the sidelines.
Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are likely to discuss progress toward a trade deal between their countries when they meet, officials said.
The U.S. and India signed a joint framework agreement earlier this year and negotiations continue. One of the officials told reporters a deal is possible, but unlikely to be settled on at the summit.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Vegas Golden Knights second-line center William Karlsson will not play in Sunday’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes because of an injury.
Coach John Tortorella confirmed Saturday that Karlsson — whose injury wasn’t specified but appears to be to his left wrist, arm or shoulder — was out for that game. But Tortorella wouldn’t comment on his availability for a potential Game 7 at Carolina on Wednesday. The Hurricanes lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.
Tortorella also didn’t offer insight into the nature of Karlsson’s injury or what his absence would mean to the team. Karlsson has three goals and six assists in 15 playoff games this year with a plus-10 rating.
He was injured in Thursday night’s 4-2 loss at Carolina.
“When we lose Bill, it kind of screws things up,” Tortorella said after the game. “We lost momentum when we went back to back in penalties. It was about the same time that we lost Bill. We’ve got to find a way.”
Karlsson missed nearly six months of the regular season to a lower-body injury, returning for the beginning of the second-round series against Anaheim.
Mitch Marner primarily played center when Karlsson was out. When he returned, Marner was mostly Karlsson’s linemate at right wing.
“We’ll see how it goes, but I think center-wise, you’ve just got to be a little more patient with being in the right spot, helping out on the walls, especially in this series,” Marner said. “We know we’re playing a team that really likes to pinch down on you and try to make it hard to get pucks out or make that play.”
