Skip the jet lag: A new hotel debuting in Healdsburg is bringing a European-style escape to wine country, where afternoon aperitifs, candlelit dinners, and an unhurried pace replace the need for a passport stamp.

Steps from the town’s charming square, Liora Estate leans into the art of slow travel, borrowing cues from the Mediterranean and beyond. The May 1 opening of the French Chateau-style hotel adds to the European feel of Sonoma County, where certain tasting rooms evoke France and Italy, and French bakeries turn out flaky croissants and savory quiches.

Liora Estate transforms the former 27 North property into a 16-room retreat designed to capture the romance and ritual of a European getaway. There’s Maréla, an on-site coastal European wine bistro centered on seasonal ingredients, and a daily Sonoma Wine Hour, where guests gather over curated pours from local vineyards as vinyl spins in the background.

Rooms at Liora Estate feature amenities like fireplaces, soaking tubs, wrought-iron balconies, and record players.

Evenings wind down with thoughtful touches including local truffles at turndown, fireplaces flickering, and record-listening prompt cards. (Each room is outfitted with a vinyl record player and guests will have access to a curated music library to set their own soundtrack).

Those familiar with Healdsburg may recognize echoes of the property’s earlier identity as Hotel Les Mars, which originally opened in the space in 2005, inspired by European travels.

Guest rooms strike a balance between romantic and residential, with cozy fireplaces, wrought-iron balconies, and deep soaking tubs.

The hotel is part of the Foley Entertainment Group collection, which also includes the luxury MacArthur Place, a 64-room property in nearby Sonoma.

Liora Estate takes its name from the phrase “my light,” a fitting ethos for a stay centered on warmth and shared experience.

Daily rituals include mornings that begin with locally sourced coffee and honey, while a sundown ritual softens the lighting, lights candles, and shifts the soundtrack to slower, more romantic tunes. Guests are welcomed with an aperitif at check-in, and at departure, receive a signature “Parting Light” candle, which is an estate-scented keepsake designed to extend the memory of their stay.

Adding to Healdsburg’s already Michelin-studded dining scene, Maréla channels seaside destinations across the Mediterranean. The menu leans into shareable, seasonal dishes like house-made focaccia, lobster salad with seaweed crostini, and a curated selection of oysters. Larger plates include decadent dishes like king crab cavatelli and côte de boeuf for two.
