“The situation in the olive oil sector is worsening. In recent days, the market has shown a further deterioration compared to what was already reported on May 28th at the MASAF roundtable.”

He reports it Confagricoltura, together with Unapol e Assofrantoi, which highlights how “Actual trading values are currently far lower than those officially recorded. With prices even around €4,50/kg—about 30% lower than those recorded in May—the product is facing significant difficulties in placement, with increasingly severe consequences for the liquidity and economic sustainability of olive oil producers.”

The meeting held at the Ministry

This unsustainable situation calls for the urgent implementation of the measures announced by Undersecretary Patrizio La Pietra, whom we thank for his prompt convening of the meeting and his attention to the Confederation’s proposals.

“It is essential – reads a note – lUrgent activation of a discussion table with the Large-Scale Retail Trade (GDO) to build an agreement that promotes Italian extra virgin olive oil, promotes its correct commercial positioning, and supports its consumption, thus making a concrete contribution to market recovery.”

Equally urgent is the start of the institutional communication campaign announced by the Undersecretary, together with the implementation, before the start of the next olive oil campaign, of the measures shared at the Olive Oil Table.

“The time factor – it is emphasized – Today, this is more crucial than ever: under these market conditions, companies are unable to sustain their financial commitments and, therefore, face the next campaign without adequate support. In particular, tools for accessing and supporting credit for businesses are requested, reduction of social security contributions, de minimis storage measures and any other initiative useful for company liquidity and the economic stability of the sector”.

The need to increase the checks on imports and mixtures from within and outside the EU, ensuring greater transparency towards the consumer.

“The market situation today requires timely and concrete responses – conclude Confagricoltura, Unapol and Assofrantoi – so that the interventions can produce useful effects before the start of the next campaign and help avoid a further worsening of the current crisis”.
