School’s out. Summer is here. And Saloniki, the Greek mini-chain run by chef Jody Adams and the A Street Hospitality team — the folks who brought you La Padrona, Porto, and Trade — is expanding throughout the city. The week also marks a sad goodbye to a beloved Japanese restaurant in Porter Square and a sudden farewell to a promising Allston pizza parlor. In happier news, say hello to an intriguing South End cafe.
Openings: Greek fast-casual powerhouse Saloniki continues to expand with three new locations throughout July: Brighton (1936 Beacon St.) is slated to open on Wednesday, July 1, and Allston (180 Brighton Ave.) on Wednesday, July 8. Last but not least, they will relocate a Fenway branch (1330 Boylston St.) on Wednesday, July 15. Star chef Adams, with A Street Hospitality partners Jon Mendez and Eric Papachristos, launched the brand in 2016 on Kilmarnock Street.
Look for the same team to open a “solid, classic” restaurant in the former Bristol Lounge space (200 Boylston St.) later this year.
The South End gets a new café with the addition of Fai Canteen (535 Albany St.), open from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. weekdays. Enjoy an array of breakfast and lunch items that transcend the typical: There are egg-and-cheese sandwiches and BLTs, but also rye chocolate brownies, buckwheat blackberry jam bars, and homemade za’atar potato chips.
Closings: Tampopo, a cherished Japanese restaurant at The Porter Exchange (1815 Massachusetts Ave.) in Cambridge, will close after 34 years in business. Its final dinner happens on Tuesday, June 30, confirms owner Yasumasa Itoh. Get the tempura — firm and flavorful, never overfried or oily, according to a Globe spotlight — while you still can.
In Allston, FiDO Pizza (250 Western Ave.) has closed after a year in business. It’s a rare bump in the road for Traveler Street Hospitality, the South End-based group behind Bar Mezzana, Black Lamb, No Relation, and Shore Leave.
“It’s a wonderful restaurant that we’re disappointed came at the wrong time,” the group wrote in a farewell post.

And, in Chestnut Hill, Davio’s will shutter on Sunday, June 28, after 13 years in business, confirms a rep. Plenty of locations remain in Back Bay, Seaport, Foxborough, Lynnfield, and at Logan Airport, however.
As our friends at Boston Magazine report, the restaurant is closing due to a change in ownership of Showcase SuperLux Chestnut Hill, which shares space with Davio’s.
Coming soon: On the Cape, Provincetown gets its very own branch of Pain D’Avignon in July (385 Commercial St.), with a grab-and-go cafe serving cold brew, breads, pastries, salads — and frozen pizza.
