The experts at CHOICE have revealed the best olive oil to buy from the supermarket.

The consumer group picked thirty popular brands of the cooking staple that are labelled ‘extra-virgin’ and available in major supermarket chains.

The blind taste test was conducted externally, and each olive oil was assessed for aroma, flavour or palate, and overall impression.

The Monini Classico Extra Virgin Olive Oil took first place in the “best tasting” category, scoring 88 per cent.

The product has a retail price of $2.93 per 100mL and is available at Coles and Woolworths.

The product was praised for its “creamy and smooth texture” and a “well-balanced mouthfeel”.

If you wanted to buy something home-grown, the Cobram Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil Classic Flavour was crowned the best Australian version.

Priced at $3.33 per 100mL, the liquid received a score of 80 per cent by the CHOICE experts.

“Our testers noted it is a high-quality olive oil, with beautiful fruit aromas and a buttery mouthfeel,” CHOICE Editor, Pru Engel, said.

“It was also recommended in our last test in 2021, showing its consistent quality over time.”

But if you can’t spare $22 at your next grocery shop, the consumer group said the best-performing budget-friendly option was the Woolworths Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Aldi’s Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Pru said both products scored 78 per cent in the blind taste test and cost under $2 per 100mL.

CHOICE recommended choosing fresh olive oil and keeping it away from heat, such as in your pantry or cupboard.

If it’s too close to your stovetop or exposed to the sun, it can ruin the flavour.

“Be mindful of where the olive oil is displayed in store,” Pru added. “Bottles near a refrigerator motor or in shop windows exposed to direct sunlight are best avoided.”

“Exposing olive oil to air over time can diminish its flavour, so we recommend ensuring your bottle is tightly sealed after each use.”
