A community challenge to fight hunger has now surpassed its fundraising goal.
The #BurghProud Challenge has raised more than $1.5 million for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, surpassing its goal of $1 million
Over 3,500 fundraisers and 4,300 supporters from across the country took part in the month-long effort, which challenged participants to move 30 miles in 30 days while raising money for neighbors in need.
“Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the coming together of Pittsburgh’s iconic sports teams, more of our neighbors will have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. This achievement is a powerful reminder that when we come together with compassion and purpose, we can make a meaningful difference in so many lives,” said Food Bank Chief External Affairs Officer Charla Irwin-Buncher.
Organizers say the funds will provide the equivalent of 4.5 million meals through the Food Bank and its network of pantries and meal programs, helping meet increased demand during the summer when many children lose access to school meals.
