Cantina Boccone has just opened its doors beneath the railway arches in Deptford Yard, bringing together Portuguese wine and Italian meats and cheeses.

Described as an “Italian and Portuguese affair”, the new venue is the creation of founders Fabio Forin, from Rome, and Gonçalo Albuquerque, from Lisbon.

The menu is designed to be enjoyed alongside a glass of wine rather than as a standalone meal. Its staple offering is the ‘Boccone Board’, featuring cured meats, cheeses and bread.

It also has a selection of small plates on offer, including chouriço assado, bacalhau à Brás, buffalo mozzarella with grilled aubergines, handmade wild boar tortelloni and Portuguese sardines.

The wine list features house wine served by the glass and carafe, alongside bottles from ‘lesser-seen’ Portuguese and Italian regions.

“We wanted the wine to feel generous and personal, not intimidating,” said Gonçalo. “Portuguese wine is still underrepresented in London, especially beyond the obvious regions, and we wanted to show bottles that feel exciting without turning the whole thing into a lecture.

“The point is to drink well, eat well, and stay longer than you planned.”

The pair, who are ‘partners in life as well as business’, moved to the area in 2023 and have spent the past five years dreaming up the idea of Cantina Boccone.

In the next couple months, there will be a small programme of events with further details to be announced soon.
