The French organic food market reached €12.6 billion in value in 2025, a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year, according to a report from Agence Bio, a French organisation that promotes the organic sector.
The organic market expanded not just in value, registering a 2% volume increase, compared to a 0.3% growth rate for the broader food market.
Driving this expansion were ten product categories, including fruits and vegetables, eggs, baked goods, ready-to-eat meals, meat, and dairy.
Regarding distribution channels, Agence Bio highlighted that organic product sales are rising across all networks.
Positive Growth
Notably, supermarkets saw a return to positive growth in organic sales for the first time since 2021.
“Consumer confidence is there, proving their interest in organic products and their understanding of the benefits of organic for the environment and for health,” said Bruno Martel, president of the Agence Bio.
“While direct sales and specialty stores have successfully taken over in promoting this virtuous production method, supermarkets still have a major role to play.”
Struggling Production Sector
In 2025, 17.3% of French farms were managed using organic farming methods, up slightly from the 16.8% registered in 2024.
However, the total number of farms committed to organic agriculture declined for the first time, slipping 1.3%, to around 61,159 farms.
A similar downward trend has impacted organic acreage for three years running, the sector has lost 1.1% of its total surface area in 2025, representing a decline of 30,737 hectares.
General Contraction Trends
These figures need to be put in perspective, as they follow the general contraction trends currently seen across the broader agricultural sector, the report noted.
“Environmentally conscious consumers are also customers of large and medium-sized retailers,” said Martel.
“The more of us who mobilise to give organic farming visibility, from distribution across all channels to consumers’ plates, the more momentum we will give our producers”
