CHICAGO — The James Beard Awards are looking for a new home after more than a decade in Chicago.

The James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday it is launching a national search for the future home of the James Beard Awards, one of the culinary industry’s most prestigious honors.

Chicago has hosted the awards since 2015 and is slated to continue to do so through 2028. The city will be given a chance to remain the awards ceremony’s host as part of the search process, according to a press release.

“We’re deeply grateful to Chicago for a remarkable partnership heading into our 12th year next year, and for helping the Awards grow into the joyous, multi-day celebration they are today,” Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation, said in a press release. “As we look ahead, we’re excited to hear from destinations — including Chicago — ready to champion this vital industry, and who recognize the essential role independent restaurants play in shaping a thriving future for America’s communities, economy and culture.”

The newly selected host city will stage the awards from 2029 through 2033, according to a press release. U.S. cities can apply through a formal request for proposal process, the first stage of which opened Wednesday, according to the foundation.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 7, and destinations chosen to submit a request for proposal will be notified in mid-August. A final location will be announced in early 2027, according to the foundation.

Often called the “Oscars of the food world,” the Beard Awards recognize exceptional talent in the culinary and food media industries. The recognition also often serves as a guide for diners and out-of-town guests.

The awards weekend has provided an economic bump for Chicago as the city has welcomed top chefs, restaurateurs, journalists, culinary leaders and food advocates for industry panels, pop-ups and citywide events surrounding the official ceremonies.

This year’s awards, held at the Lyric Opera House Downtown, generated $8.3 million in direct spending and a total economic impact of $17 million for the Chicago area, according to Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics Company.

The awards were hosted in New York City from the first ceremony in 1991 until 2014.
