Historic Quebec cheese brand being sold to a French company

A 130-year-old slice of Quebec history – the OKA cheese brand – is set to become French.

The Quebec dairy co-operative Agropur which owns the popular cheese brand announced that it is selling its fine cheese division to Lactalis.

With the announcement, Agropur said it was getting out of the fine cheese business to focus on milk production, industrial cheese, butter and other dairy products.

The French dairy firm will also acquire other Quebec-made cheese brands Monsieur Gustav and L’Extra as well as two production facilities from Agropur as part of the deal.

The acquisition has yet to be approved by federal regulators.

If the sale goes through, Lactalis which owns other dairy brands like Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond and Lactantia, is set to occupy more grocery shelves.
