I’ve never cared much for pistachios, but I’ll never forget the first time I tried pistachio-flavored gelato. I was in Milan for Salone del Mobile 2022, at a press dinner following a head-spinning day of appointments. When the dessert course came out, it didn’t immediately register to me as pistachio—perhaps because the color was a light tan as opposed to the pastel green I’m used to seeing in the United States. One spoonful and I was hooked. The taste was sweet and nutty, almost peanut-buttery, rich and complex. And now, I have to get it every time I’m back in Italy.

That revelatory moment came back to me as soon as I opened the pistachio-scented candle from Loewe’s range of Home Scents. Unlit and out of the box, the candle has a sugar-forward scent with a hint of marzipan. But once it’s burning, the fragrance mellows out, and the milky aroma of pistachios—or “green gold,” as they’re called in Italy—begins filling the room.

This candle makes your home smell like the inside of an Italian bakery. A guest might think you have some decadent dessert in the oven or that you’re capitalizing on the Dubai chocolate craze that caused worldwide shortages of the shelled nut.

I also love the candle’s sculptural vessel. Handmade in Spain out of terracotta and glazed an herbaceous shade of green, the ribbed pot takes cues from ancient Greek ceramics, particularly a late 5th-century BC terracotta mug. Loewe uses the same silhouette in different colors to house all of its Home Scents, each designed around a single ingredient. The bottoms of the jars sport the Loewe anagram.

The candle comes with either one or two wicks, and the jar doubles as a keepsake vase (or super chic pen holder) that will last long after the final flame goes out.
