I’ve had the large for about two years and I still want to upgrade the handle and bands on it. However, I was just gifted the XL on the left. I feel like the XL will be better long term, but I’m not sure if there are any caveats to the XL that would make it worth keeping the L instead. What are y’alls experiences with the L vs the XL?

Keep both of them. That’s the American way!
If I had to choose, I would go with the XL. I’ve never heard anybody complain that they had *too much* space on their grill grate before. Not to mention, you would save the money that you otherwise would spend replacing the parts on the L, and could sell it as-is.
I was gifted a large when my dad moved to a retirement home, and while it works well, I find I often have to squeeze a brisket into it so it fits. Even then, it’s not unusual for the brisket to be touching the sidewalls on both ends. Same with overly large turkeys. Considering the price I (didn’t) pay I have zero reason to complain, but if he had both and I had to choose one, it would be the larger one.
Although it looks like you have tons of room in there, you could just keep both..
I posted about a similar scenario with a L and XL. Kept both and am amazed how often I find myself having both fired up at the same time for different tasks.
Tough choice but if I had to pick 1 I’d go with the XL. The only con of the XL is it will consume more charcoal. You can get a kick ash basket with a divider though and only fill half for smaller cooks.
Yes.
Keep both, have one dedicated to specific tasks
I own a xl and try and imagine owning a large and the fact that I’m saying “I may not have enough space on the large” makes me smile because I have the XL.
Both
I find that the spacing between the diffuser and the grill top is narrower on the XL. The large offers a bit more space to add a water trey under your food. Also, the xl takes longer to heat up and takes more fuel. I have never really found the XL to be all that useful.
Why do you have to get rid of one of them?
Keep the XL and buy a charcoal reducing ring. Best of both worlds
Like my dad used to say “It’s better to have the space and not need it then to need it and not have it”
Large!
Keep both and get a minimax
Big boy
Dude, keep both, I have 2 and use them both in tandem all the time when im having gatherings, and i like to smoke a coupla turkeys for the work thjanksgiving and xmas parties. I love having 2.
Yes
You’re very fortunate to have a 1st world problem like this. I would have to agree to keep both if you have the room. Other wise alway keep the larger.
I love the XL for BBQ (BBQ is pulled pork or pork ribs, BTW, the rest is bullshit… I live in Texas; just trying to rile up the natives…) but for everyday grilling, it’s too big and takes too long to heat up. My L is perfect for everyday grilling.
So ask yourself, which one do you value the most and then just keep both! Problem solved!!
Boaf
I have a large but I added a 2nd rack when I need it. Good all around and less surface area to clean!
I’d keep the XL and use it to the fullest!
I wish I had more space when hosting. Though I host maybe a few times a year only.
I like making whole and split packers on my L. Should’ve gone for the XL 100%.
