What do folks use for starter when making homemade yogurt? After many disappointing attempts at homemade yogurt and ‘fake’ non-fermented yogurts (made with nuts and seeds or tofu – no coconut for me), I finally made a delicious simple soy yogurt; good taste, good texture, decent nutrition. The yogurt starter powders seem very expensive, and I’m not sure about using store bought vegan yogurt as a starter because they usually have a lot of extra ingredients, which seem like they might mess with the process. I know you can use some homemade yogurt to start a new batch, but it sounds like eventually you need to use a new starter again. Any guidance would be appreciated!

I just bought a single serve cup of plain almond yogurt and used that as a starter. It worked just fine. I think any extra ingredients are gonna get so diluted in your yogurt that they won’t really make much of a difference.
