I get squirrels that will get into my vegetables and just take a few bites. The cute little bastards… I wouldn’t mind so much if they ate an entire one, but just taking a few bites from 5 or 6 in a row is just dickish.
Just buy a couple from the supermarket and lie to the kid. It’s not about the vegetables.
I remember one time when my oldest was that age, we made cupcakes. My son went next door to give one to my neighbor Gary. Gary started to decline but I gave him a look and told him quietly “It’s not about the cupcake.” My son to this day (he’s 22 now) is still pretty introverted, so him going next door, knocking, and asking him if he wanted a cupcake was a big deal. I didn’t care if Gary turned around and threw away the cupcake when my son was out of sight.
It wasn’t about the cupcake. Many times in life it isn’t. There is something to be said about teaching them “Sometimes the squirrel gets theirs” but I wouldn’t in this situation. Now if they did something to cause the vegetables to get eaten, that’s a different story, but green peppers are cheap.
Looks like maybe rodents, like rats/mice

deer and rabbit ate ALL my pepper, cucumber and okra plants (they apparently don’t care for eggplant or tomato plants). so while I feel empathy for your situation, just know – it could have been much worse.

Not sure what ate them, but maybe it’s time to read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” together. That and set up a camera if you can, to see who is raiding your garden.

All I can offer as a suggestion is birds. I was shocked to see them munching on mine. The only difference though, is they only went for bell peppers and tomatoes after they start turning red. They never touched the green ones and in 10 years of growing, it’s the first I’ve seen birds munching on them. Worms must be scarce this year, I guess. Now I just pluck them green and ripen them indoors.
In reading such posts similar to this one, I learned a great solution. This damage can be done by several different critters such as opossums and even raccoons depending on where you live. If you have a raccoon problem well, God help you . But for every thing else, when Halloween comes around, pick up a couple of those motion sensor sculls that light up and make scary sounds. If that doesn’t work, then it’s your neighbor sneaking in and eating your vegetables. lol I myself have discovered that putting used coffee grounds down on the dirt not only do the critters not like it but ants hate it and will not build there home their. If you use them make sure they are a few days old and don’t touch the roots. As an added benefit it adds acid to your soil amongst other benefits to your garden.
My squirrels do this, then they halfass burry them.
Raccoons sometimes get ours

the title reminds my of ancient chinese langauge class. they didn’t have punctuation, so you had to work out the meaning by yourself. I hope you get that pest under control. Broke my adult heart to see my first ripe tomato this year fucked up by some squirrel or rat.
