History, culture and charity will come together this Friday, July 31, as the traditional Roman Night in Narona returns to the village of Vid near Metković.
This year’s event has a special humanitarian focus, with all proceeds from food sales being donated to support the missions established by Father Ante Gabrić in India, as well as missionary work in Uganda. The initiative is organised by the Father Ante Gabrić Foundation and Metković Secondary School.
Jointly organised by the Metković Tourist Board and the Narona Archaeological Museum, with support from the City of Metković, the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Tourist Board and the Croatian National Tourist Board, the event promises an evening that blends archaeology, history, gastronomy, education and entertainment.
Festivities begin at 7:00 p.m. with children’s workshops and games, demonstrations of ancient Roman crafts, and the opening of a market featuring local products and handmade crafts.
At 7:30 p.m., archaeologist Ivana Ožanić Roguljić will give a lecture exploring the ancient city of Narona and the everyday lives of its Roman inhabitants.
The official opening ceremony takes place at 8:00 p.m., followed by demonstrations of traditional Roman hairstyles and stone-carving techniques. Visitors will also have the chance to sample dishes and desserts inspired by ancient Roman cuisine, while a cookbook featuring authentic Roman recipes will be available in the museum’s gift shop.
As night falls, the programme continues with a fire dance performance by the Vodorige group and an engaging storytelling session on classical myths led by Marijana Curić.
The highlight of the evening begins at 9:30 p.m. in the arena, where visitors can experience thrilling gladiator battles, exotic dance performances and a spectacular fire show recreating the atmosphere of ancient Narona.
Organisers say this year’s Roman Night once again demonstrates how cultural heritage can bring communities together while supporting meaningful humanitarian causes.
To make the event even more accessible, free transport for visitors will be provided by Čazmatrans.
