President Lee Jae-myung, on an official visit to Chile, presented commemorative gifts including a mother-of-pearl lacquerware “Irworobongdo” to President Jose Antonio Kast on the 30th. President Kast, in turn, gave Lee and his wife a jewelry box made of lapis lazuli, a Chilean specialty, along with an alpaca blanket, a coffee drip set and Chilean wine, strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
Regarding the Irworobongdo gift, the Presidential Office said it “carries the wish that President Kast, who took office this March, will lead state affairs anew with wise leadership and achieve prosperity for Chile.” The Irworobongdo is a painting that once adorned the space behind the royal throne during the Joseon Dynasty, rendered here using traditional mother-of-pearl inlay techniques.
Considering that Chile is a world-renowned wine-producing region, a set of wine glasses crafted from traditional Korean bronzeware was also prepared as a gift. The Presidential Office said it was “selected to introduce the beauty of our traditional bronzeware and the excellent techniques of our metal craftsmanship.”
To President Kast’s wife, Maria Pia Adriasola Barroilhet, Lee presented a Western-style tableware set made of white porcelain and a “Premium K-Beauty Package” containing various types of Korean cosmetics. According to the Presidential Office, the blue crystalline patterns expressed through the crystalline glaze technique on the white porcelain tableware set evoke the Milky Way over Chile’s Atacama Desert. It said the gift was selected to express the wish that the friendship and exchange between the two nations will shine as long as the starlight in the night sky.
Meanwhile, following the summit that day, President Kast spontaneously gave Lee the pen used at the signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding (MOU) concluded between the two sides.
