MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – On this edition of Foodie Friday, TV6’s Michael Sobeck brought a taste of Japan to the Upper Michigan Today studio.
So, what was on the menu? The main dish was a Japanese golden curry, but Michael also shared a variety of appetizers—each offering Audrey Stetson and John Redfield a chance to learn more about Japanese cuisine and culture.
Michael is an enthusiast of all things Japanese and serves as a Japan delegate for the Marquette Area Sister City Partnership. In the segment below, he greets viewers with an “おはよう” (“good morning”) and shares insight into Higashiomi delegates’ recent visit to “da Yoop.”
Want to explore food from another country without the travel time or expense? Michael has a recipe you can make right in your own kitchen.
Japanese golden curry is quick, affordable and accessible to prepare here in the U.P.
While the curry simmered, Audrey and John sipped on some miso soup. Michael also brought along a sweet surprise: matcha mochi.
Onigiri is another staple of Japanese cuisine. Learn how to make the simple rice snack below with just rice, nori (dried, edible seaweed) and salt.
UMT videographer and fellow foodie Brandon Baszynski joined in for a taste of Japan as Michael demonstrated how to add the golden curry mix.
Next, John and Brandon made their own versions of the onigiri as the curry’s flavors continued to develop.
Finally, it was time to plate up and dig in. UMT saved the best for last with a tasting of Michael’s Japanese golden curry—served, of course, with sticky rice on the side.
Stay tuned for more on Michael’s experience with Higashiomi delegates in Marquette on TV6+.
